Installing a
Lofrans' Tigres Electric Windlass
By Brett Wylie

Victoria installed
her windlass topside aft of the cutter stay just forward of the
front hatch.

The design & installation features |
Keeps
weight off the bow |
|
The all chain rode now sits below the waterline thus it keeps
the weight low |
| It is
easy to access the windlass and is protected with a canvas
cover. |
| As an
aside bonus, gives more deck storage locker since the windlass
is no longer in the forward locker. Now more items such as
emergency rope rode, anchoring gear, snubbers, fenders,
etc. can be stored topside. |
| As it
turns out, the commercial s.s. anchor stopper's holes fit near
exactly to the bolt holes in the anchor roller. It required a
small bit of "dremel" tooling to make do. |

windlass sitting in position. chain now has good direct 90 degree
angle to bow roller. All chain rode is fed below via 2" PVC
slightly slanted first toward the centerline in the upper
compartment v-berth then back to and at an angle between v-berth
cushions. This drops the chain into the deepest part of the
storage under the foot section of the v-berth berths.
The all chain rode now sits back, low and below the waterline.
Additionally, it does not block the haweshole pipe feeding out or
retrieving. The deck anchor locker is now used for storage of the
lighter in weight, backup emergency rode, made up of 225' 5/8"
nylon rode and 25' of BB chain.

cut in aft portion of anchor locker lid. Added a raised
fairlead scoop here so the chain travels forward from the
windlass, under the lid thru this fairlead funnel made in the back
of the lid, thus forward and out the front end of the locker thru
it's existing fairlead funnel. This way, the locker is opened
easily out of the way when raising or lowering the primary chain
rode; rather then having the chain run over the top of the locker
lid and block it's opening.

Image showing pvc
pipe (painted brown and soon to be decoratively "twined") feeding
chain back from the upper v-berth locker to the storage under foot
section of v-berth forward. Hand control box is plugged in,
directly behind the pvc pipe, and accessed thru the front hatch
where it is hung on a lanyard and easily reached. I tried not to
alter the existing wood in the v-berth cabin as much as possible.
Notice the circuit breaker switch installed on the bulkhead
forward between the v-berths, in place of a 110 plug socket.

I'm very happy with this installation and it works very well
mechanically.
